Amy Steunenberg
BA, BEd (University of British Columbia)

Amy's background includes seven years of teaching French, French as a Second Language, Enriched English and English as Second Language in the western Canadian school system. She is certified TESOL instructor, and has been an instructor with the Maui Language Institute for five years. Amy also teaches French for the Pace program on Maui. She is an avid sports enthusiast and enjoys volleyball, snow boarding, tennis, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing.


Derek Snyder
BA (Anthropology, University of Hawai'i at Hilo), MA (English as a Second Language, University of Hawai'i at Manoa)

Derek holds a Master's degree in English as a Second Language (ESL) from the Second Language Studies department at UH-Manoa. His teaching background includes being an English instructor both in Japan and in Hawai'i. Immediately before joining the staff at the Maui Language Institute, he was an English instructor for 3 years at the Hawai'I English Language Program (H.E.L.P.) at UH-Manoa. Derek has also been an English instructor in UH-Manoa's N.I.C.E. Program, UH-Manoa's Special English Program, Kapi'olani Community College's Special English Program, and at TransPacific Hawai'i College. He has also worked extensively in the areas of ESL program administration and international student housing coordination. Derek is passionate about Hawaiian history and culture and one of his main focuses in the field of ESL is in content-based curriculum development in the area of Hawaiian Studies. In his free time, Derek enjoys learning about Hawai'i, traveling, hiking, snorkeling, watching college basketball, and spending time with his wife.


Eric Paul Shaffer
Eric Paul Shaffer BS (Ball State University), MA (University of New Mexico), PhD (University of California, Davis)

Eric has taught English in America and Japan for twenty-four years. He taught Conversational English, English Composition, and English and American literature at the University of the Ryukyus on Okinawa for six years, a lecturer at Maui Community College, and UH-Manoa's Maui Outreach from 2000. He specializes in Business English and has taught executives from around the world. He has published five books of poetry, most recently Lahaina Noon, Portable Planet and Living at the Monastery, Working in the Kitchen. He is also a writer of fiction and non-fiction and review books for a local weekly newspaper. He received Hawai‘i's 2002 Elliot Cades Award for Literature. His other interests include running, reading, hiking, snorkelling, playing guitar, studying Hawai‘ian and Indonesian, and watching sunsets with his wife Veronica. 


Jackie Perry
Jackie Perry BA (University of Hawaii), MSW (University of Hawaii)

Jackie has been an instructor for the Maui Language institute for eight years, and is currently serving as a guest instructor for visiting colleges and universities. Most recently, she designed and implemented the curriculla for Japan's Fukuyama City Junior College for Women, Koriyama University, Den-en Chofu University and students from Hachijo Island. Jacky is also a counslor and advisor for MLI students.


Kumu Keli`i Tau`a
Kumu Keli`i Tau`a PhD (Columbia Pacific University) Hawaiian Studies

Keli`i Tau`a is a hula master and has been teaching hula and chant at the Maui Language Institute for two years. Previously, Keli`i taught Hawaiian Studies for the University of Hawaii - Leeward Community College and the Department of Education on Oahu. In 1986, he joined Maui Community College as the PR and activities coordinator. His goal with international students is to heighten their awareness of hula by demonstrating through his teaching that it is more than movement; it encompassed everything one tastes, sees, hears, and feels to tell the story of the dance. Hula students gain a better understanding of the chants' messages about life in the past and present, and what is to be expected in the future.


Kumu Kapono Kamauna Kumu Kapono Kamauna
Master Hula Teacher and Performer

Kapono hails from Maui where he graduated from Baldwin High School and studied Hawaiian studies and liberal arts at the university level. He graduated as a Kumu Hula in 2001 after nine years of study under Kumu Keli`i Tau`a. He has taught Hawaiian studies and hula at Haleakala Waldorf School, Maui Waena Intermediate School and Baldwin High School. He is the vice president of the Polynesian Tahiti Fete and can be seen in performance as a chanter and dancer at the Old Lahaina Luau.


Mark Alexander Roy
Mark Roy BA (University of Leeds, UK), MSc (University of Salford, Manchester, UK).

Mark had lived and taught English in Japan for five years from 1999 - 2004. Mark has worked for a number of agencies including a privately owned Japanese corporation (GEOS), various government high schools, an independent language school and Nihon University. His time in Japan enabled him to develop into an experienced teacher and also gave him insight into the wonderful language and culture of the Japanese people. In his free time, you can find Mark either up a mountain or in the ocean as he loves outdoor activities, especially, snowboarding, waterskiing, scuba-diving and now, windsurfing. Mark is an avid traveler, and photography is also an important part of Mark's life as it has allowed him to capture his most memorable moments throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania.


Nicole Hokoana Pua
Nicole Hokoana Pua BEd (University of Hawai’i at Manoa, MC (University of Phoenix)

Nicole joined the Maui Language Institute faculty in 2004. She taught conversational English and Hawai`ian history for Rainbow Studies, MLI’s summer program. Prior to MLI, Nicole taught United States history for the Department of Education for five years. She has also tutored students in a broad range of topics. Nicole is native to the island of Maui and enjoys spending leisure time with her family, especially weekend trips to the beach with young daughter.


Susan Luk - Guest Faculty
Susan Luk BA (California State University), BBS (Weber State College) MEd (University of Hawaii, Manoa), PhD (University of Hawaii, Manoa).

Susan has an extensive teaching career in ESL both in Hawaii and on the US mainland. Prior to joining the faculty at the Maui Language Institute, Susan was an instructor and administrator with the Pasadena City College where she also supervised and coordinated all operations in the ESL multimedia lab. During her doctorate degree, Susan specialized in Higher Education Administration and conducted her research in "The Impact of Video Disc Computer Assisted Instruction on College Students Studying English as a Second Language".


Joseph E. Scuro, Jr.
Attorney at Law 

Joe is licensed to practice law in the states of Texas and Ohio, the United States Supreme Court, Court of Military Appeals and numerous federal appellate and district courts.  He was attorney of record in cases featured on "Sixty Minutes" (CBS), "20/20" (ABC), "Hard Copy", "A Current Affair", and "Inside Edition".  He has also authored or contributed chapters on over 90 articles and books dealing with public entity, law enforcement, employment discrimination, business law or other legal subject matters.  Joe has lectured or instructed courses nationally since 1978 at numerous colleges, law schools, graduate programs and continuing education.   He has taught custom designed business law courses for visiting international lawyers and business professionals at the Maui Language Institute.
